Visit and experience the wonderful sights, sounds, and smells of the Batticaloa Public Market. It’s a great chance for visitors and the general public to learn about the fresh produce industry and the district’s vegetable supply chain. Walk through the fruit and vegetable stalls (on the ground floor) and have a close up view of the varieties of locally produced and consumed fruits and vegetables. Also on the ground floor you can find vendors selling dried fish and other grocery items.
Local vegetables are cultivated seasonally and are only available in-season. Vegetables are also brought in from Dambulla market on a regular basis to meet local demand. On the first floor you will find the meat and fish stalls. You can learn about the local fish species that live in the lagoon and eastern sea. During market hours the site can be extremely busy, make sure you don’t walk in anyone’s way. The car park in front of the market charges 20/- for parking.
