My name is Faizar but most people in Arugam Bay call me 'Sulfi'. I am well-known in Arugam Bay among the hoteliers, community members, and tourists alike. I started in the tourism industry in 2001, just after finishing school, when the informal tourism sector was booming in Arugam Bay. My first job was at Hangloose guesthouse where I took tourists to attractions around Arugam Bay. We visited Muhudu Maha Vihara, Kudumbigala Temple, Magul Maha Vihara, Lagoon safaris and other places. Despite speaking no English, I managed the programs with gestures and by learning a few words here and there and . I couldn’t speak any English when I started. But with gestures, with few words learned here and there – I try to manage the programs. That makes me feel happy and I enjoyed the trip.
After the disastrous Tsunami in 2004 a Community Tourism program was initiated by a local NGO and I was trained to become a community guide. In 2006, I received an Area Guide license from the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and I plan to also become a National Guide. Over the years I have learned about the many sites around Arugam Bay, from the wildlife to the local communities, and I have developed stories for each place. I have built a name in Arugam Bay as a knowledgeable and respected community guide.
