Kattankudy, Batticaloa

Kattankudy is one of 14 Divisional Secretary divisions of Batticaloa District. This city is located around 5 Km south of Batticaloa town towards Kalmunai. The population of Kattankudy is around 49,000, they live in 18 villages within a 3.89 Sq. Km area. Neatly planted date palm trees along the center of the main road indicates you have entered the city of Kattankudy. The city is probably the nicest place in Batticaloa to have a mixture of a Sri Lankan and Arabic meal.      

The city is known as the commercial hub of Batticaloa. Most of the retail and wholesale business of the district reside here. Kattankudy is also one of the most densely populated cities in South Asia. The city was named after a wealthy Arab business man called Kattan who got married to a woman of this are and contributed a lot towards the development of the community.
