Kurukkalmadam Bird Watching Area, Batticaloa

Truly amazing area full of interesting birds.

Kurukkalmadam is a popular place along the Batticaloa-Kalmunai main road and many of the vehicles pass by this road stop at the sacred Kurukkalmadam Temple to get God's blessing.

Just behind the temple, there is a water water body stretches to about 25 acres, around 1.5 km length. This water body is used by farmers for minor cultivation/irrigation and to feed their cattle and other animals. There are a large number of small trees, bushes and other types of of wetland flora throughout this area.  It has lots of biodiversity yet to be explored. During recent years, this area has become a heaven for different species of birds—both local as well as migratory. You can view thousands of birds sitting on the trees and bushes, fly around and add great value to the nature.

From Batticaloa town, it is only around 15 km and requires just a 15-20 minute drive. Can be accessed by all kinds of vehicles.
