Nachiyar Traditional Foods, Batticaloa
Kaviya is a non-governmental organization working to empower the society who are affected economically and educationally—living below the poverty line. Currently Kaviya is working in all 14 divisional secretariat areas in the Batticaloa district supporting women's entrepreneurship development and developing market oriented strategy and implementations to improve access to markets within and outside the district for the products of women entrepreneurs.
Nachchiyar Traditional Food is a brand name for various traditional food items produced by 15 members of Kaviya in Batticaloa district and sold through their 2 sales outlets established at Station Road and near Kallady Bridge. The 3rd sales outlet will be opened soon at Vantharumoolai, next to Eastern University of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankans and foreigners are becoming more and more eager to eat traditional foods, specially oriental food items such as “string hoppers, hoppers, iddly, dosa, pittu (rice flour, Kurakkan flour, Atta flour, wheat flour, spinach, and maize flour), masala vadai, keera vadai, boori, chappatti and traditional short eats made out of cereals.”
