New Kallady Bridge, Batticaloa

The New Kallady Bridge gives you an amazing scenic view and a pleasant drive over the blue deep lagoon! Constructed parallel to the Lady Manning Bridge in Batticaloa.

In the attempt of addressing the heavy traffic jam experienced at the Lady Manning Bridge, plans were drawn in 2006 to build a new double lane bridge parallel to the old one. The construction works started in 2008 and the completed bridge was declared open on 22nd March 2013 under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The new bridge is 288.35 m (946 ft) long and 14 m (46 ft) wide. The project cost was Rs. 2.6 billion (US$ 20million) and funded by the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA). The bridge crosses the Batticaloa Lagoon and is part of the A4 Colombo-Batticaloa highway.

Early morning or evening hours are ideal to have a splendid scenic view of the blue lagoon, fishermen engaged in fishing, the beauty of the surrounding green nature, the Kallady beach and the Dutch Fort. The lights in the nights make the bridge glittering.
