Nilaveli Beach, Trincomalee

One of the wonderful places that you should not miss in Trincomalee is the Nilaveli Beach, which is described as one of the finest beaches in Sri Lanka, perhaps in Asia. The long and wide beach with the brilliant white sand gives you an unforgettable experience. Many people come to Nilaveli beach to take a break and relaxation from the hectic lives as it is less crowded compared to the beaches in the west and the south. You would be lost at Nilaveli beach in its quite serene and the crystal clear blue water. It is also very popular among sun worshipers and an ideal place for water sports like scuba diving.

Along the beach, there are many hotels and resorts for you to enjoy some delicious sea food. The famous Pigeon Island is located nearby the Nilaveli beach.

Lifesaving unit is functional during day times and you are advised to consult them on safety measures.

Seasons Accessible

The beach is opened for all season round the year. However, the ideal season to visit Nilaveli beach is during April and October. This is normally the dry season in the country and the sun is at its most intense during this period. The sea also calm during this period which is ideal for scuba diving, swimming, snorkeling and dolphin watching. 


There is no entrance fee. If you request any services like a Boat ride or diving, you need to pay them separately.

Nilaveli beach is one of the finest gifts of nature where tourists, both foreigners and locals, visit in large numbers. The preserved National Marine Park Pigeon Island is located close by. Accessibility Notes

Nilaveli beach is located 15 kilometers from Trincomalee town on the Trincomalee-Pulmoddai main road. It takes around 25-30 minute drive to reach Nilaveli from the Trinco town. When you approach Nilaveli, you would find enough sign boards that will direct you to Nilaveli beach.  You can reach Nilaveli by any type of vehicle. The famous Nilaveli Beach Hotel and Anilana Beach Hotel are located along this beach.
