Pigeon Island National Park is one of two marine national parks of Sri Lanka. The national park is situated 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli, a coastal town in Eastern Province, just north of Trincomalee.
The islands can be seen clearly from the breach. There are boat services available from the beach and it will cost around RS2000/= for a round trip. Life jackets are provided and the service operates from morning to 5.30pm. It takes approximately 15 minutes to reach Pigeon island by boat.
There are several people who run this service so you need to remember to get the contact number of the boat operator, to ensure you return on the same boat.
From the Nilaveli beach on the mainland it looks like one island, but actually there are two, one small island and a larger island. The beach is covered with corals and flip-flops are recommended for walking on the beach. Snorkeling right off the beach is a fantastic experience with many fish and corals to explore.
