Puliyanthivu ("Thivu" means island in Tamil) is the metropolitan are of Batticaloa District. Most of the government offices (Kachchery, Municipal council, District main post office, etc.) schools, banks, and commercial establishments are here. The town also has places of interest for visitors, including the Old Dutch Fort, Gandhi Park, Puliyanthivu Methodist church, Jami-Us-Salam Jummah mosque and others. Koddamunai bridge connects Puliyanthivu island to the rest of the main land. Before the koddamunai bridge was constructed, Batticaloa gate area was used as a loading and unloading point. Old cranes used during that time are still visible at the location. It is believed that William Ault, the first Methodist missionary landed in Puliyanthivu Batticaloa. A statue is placed next to the Batticaloa gate to memorialize his valuable service.
